Agroforestry

Agroforestry is the raising of farm animals along with the cultivation of trees (shrub perennials), some food crops (annual perennials) or grazing on a piece of land.Importance of Agroforestry. This is not a new cultivation method and has been a traditional cultivation method in tropical countries since ancient times. Although it has existed since ancient times in Sri Lanka, it has been established as a cultivation system with a scientific background only recently

This is a simple type of ecosystem that is replaced by a natural ecosystem. Agroecosystems are less complex and stable than natural ecosystems. Therefore, those ecosystems are prone to weed invasion, diseases and pests and to adverse weather conditions and climate changes. In the last few decades, the modern agro-industrial system has emerged and the use has increased, forcing the use of expensive external inputs to restore these unstable agro-ecosystems.They have become a great threat to the environment, human and animal health.

This modern agricultural system only maximizes the production of a single crop and does not protect the nature and create sustainable industries. As a result, the yield does not increase even with the use of high inputs and the cost increases. Agroforestry has become more important as a sustainable land use method as the size and land-to-human ratio has decreased.

Forests in Sri Lanka are rapidly decreasing. This is due to the continuous clearing of forests to meet the needs of the growing population. Agroforestry is a low-input, minimally controlled production system that is particularly suitable for poor farmers with limited resources. Natural forests are protected. It has been identified as a very suitable cultivation method
